Prowling the streets of Gotham City is a man that is determined to stop crime and protect the citizens. He wears a mask to protect his identity and answers the call for help at all times of the day, but he especially protects the city at night. His name is Batman!

The character of the Batman first appeared in DC Comics in May 1939. The character of Batman became so popular that he became the star of a series of comic books beginning in 1940. Since the early days, the popularity of Batman has grown to include a live action television series, several movies and numerous cartoon series. While each of the versions have a different take on the Batman saga ranging from the comedic take of the 1960’s series to a very dark tale of some of the more recent Dark Knight versions.

While the tone of the stories has changed over the years, the basic story of Batman remains the same. The story features millionaire and philanthropist Bruce Wayne, who has the secret of being Batman. Both Wayne and Batman are noted for helping citizens of Gotham City, but in very different ways. Wayne by donating money and helping those less fortunate, and Batman by protecting the citizens from evil.

The story also features other characters including Batman’s sidekick, Robin, his butler, Alfred, Commissioner Gordon and his female helper, Batgirl. Also, the Batman saga has featured a number of super criminals who have menaced Gotham City. They included The Joker, The Penguin, Two Face, Mister Freeze and Catwoman. The identity of Batman is kept secret from everyone except for Alfred and Robin, and Batman works out of a high tech base called the Batcave.

Over the years there have been many different actors portraying the Batman character in the movies and on television. They include Adam West, Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer, George Clooney and most recently with Christian Bale portraying the Caped Crusader. While each has given a different twist to the character, they have all become memorable for their portrayals.

However, the origins of the Batman character were in the comic book industry. From his first introduction to the world in 1939, Batman has been one of the biggest selling comic books of all time. The comics have given the basis for the character, when an eight year old Bruce Wayne witnesses his parents being murdered by a criminal. Upon seeing this, Wayne dedicates his life to ridding the city of all evil. The comics further advance the story to show that he chooses the character of Batman when seeing and witnessing the attributes of a bat.

The character of Batman is unlike many other superheroes such as Superman, Spiderman and Green Lantern in that he is human, and does not possess super human attributes. Batman needs to use his brain and his technology to battle criminals. His wealth allows him the opportunity to possess state of the art equipment such as the Batmobile, his costume which possesses unique attributes, his fighting skills, his criminology skills and his ability to blend into dark spaces like his namesake, the bat.

Batman has been an American icon for over seventy years and we have seen the character change in many different ways. However, he remains one of the most popular characters ever created and continues to be seen in comic books, television shows and movies.
