Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday," and is the carnival celebration beginning around Epiphany, a holiday celebrating the visit of the three wise men to the Baby Jesus. It ends on the day before Ash Wednesday (the first day of Lent), which begins a fasting period. Fat Tuesday gets its name because it involves feasting on fatty foods before the fasting of the Lenten season.

In the United States, Mardi Gras began in Mobile, Alabama, Biloxi, Mississippi, New Orleans, Louisiana and Pensacola, Florida because that was where the French and Spanish first settled. The celebration is often associated with New Orleans, and people celebrate Mardi Gras by wearing costumes and masks, dancing, having parades and partying.

Wearing feathered face covering is a Mardi Gras tradition that dates back to pagan Rome. Masks were popular in European carnivals like the one in Venice. There were sVenetian carnival styles, which were made with porcelain, leather, glass, and/or gold leaf. Wearing them in Venice may have been a response to a rigid class system, but they are currently used for tradition, because they add an air of mystery, and because they allow for more freedom while celebrating.

Whether you want a traditional Venetian style mask or one that's even flashier, our selection of Mardi Gras feather masks has the right look for you. You'll be ready for any crazy Mardi Gras celebration when you pick one up.
