Purim Costumes

Purim is a very happy time of year. This is when Jews celebrate the salvation of the Jews form the evil Haman under the leadership of Queen Ester and her and her cousin Mordecai. It typically occurs in the end of February and beginning of March.

Unlike Halloween where trick-or-treaters go door to door to collect goodies, children celebrating Purim will go from house to house delivering goodies. The act of sending out food and drink to your friends and neighbors is called "shalach manos." In addition to this happy custom, there are usually also carnival type games and humorous plays. Above all, the celebration always includes children in Purim costumes having a great time and adults having the opportunity to indulge in a few cocktails. The main commandments of Purim are to read from the Book of Ester and to eat, drink and be merry. According to the Talmud, a person is required to drink until he cannot tell the difference between "cursed be Haman" and "blessed be Mordecai," though opinions differ as to exactly how drunk that is.

Depending on how orthodox the community is in which you live usually determines the types of costumes worn. Some communities will allow secular outfits such as princesses and superheroes while more strict orthodox communities prefer that get-ups have more religious significance. The world has come up with a happy medium by creating Jewish superheroes like Menorah Man and The Magen David. Other religiously significant Purim costumes include the Torah Boy and the Deluxe Shabbas Queen.

Purim costumes are mainly for children much like Halloween outfits also adults may dress up too. We have a great selection of Purim costumes that are respectful to wear in the most orthodox communities. They come in sizes to fit kids up to a child size 14.
