Star Wars Resource Page

In a galaxy long ago and far, far away, the Rebel forces of good battled the Empire forces of evil, and there characters such as Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia, Yoda and scores of other characters brought the saga to life.

The idea for the Star Wars story belonged to George Lucas, who had created a story line to follow the characters in a 9 movie series. After completing plans to introduce a big movie spectacle, Lucas and Universal Pictures released Star Wars on May 25, 1977. The movie, with its story of good vs. evil, groundbreaking special effects and outlandish characters became an immediate smash hit. In the U.S. alone Star Wars has grossed over $460 million making it the 3rd highest money making film of all time.

Buoyed by the success of Star Wars, Lucas filmed the 2 sequels and released The Empire Strikes Back on May 21, 1980 and Return of the Jedi on May 25, 1983. Due to personal problems at the time of completing the final installment, Lucas scrapped his plans for the sequel trilogy, but was still intrigued by the idea of how the characters evolved into the characters we were familiar with in the original Star Wars series.

After years of developing story lines for the prequels, Lucas released Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace on May 19, 1999. The much anticipated movie was a financial success, ranking as the 5th highest money making film of all time in the U.S., but with the loyal fanbase, it never reached the artistic success of the original. In fact, the subsequent films, also were financially successful, but never satisfied loyal fans of the series. Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones was released on May 16, 2002 and Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith was released on May 19, 2005. All 6 of the films have done very well at the box office, earning a combined $2.4 billion dollars worldwide.
