Costume SuperCenter’s costume of the week is GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra. I’m not a comic book aficionado and always thought GI Joe was a lone, Rambo style commando soldier. The movie has opened my eyes to the fact that GI Joe is actually an elite military unit.  The movie, GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra, is set 10 years into the future and follows two American soldiers, Duke and Ripcord, who join the G.I. Joe Team after being attacked by Cobra troops.

In a broad nutshell, Cobra leaders, McCullen and the Doctor, create a nanotechnology warhead that they plan to use to dominate the world and it’s up to GI Joe to stop them. GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra shows how Cobra came to be and how the main characters Duke and Ripcord rose to become the elite GI Joe Soldiers. It is filled with twists and action sequences.  The movie culminates with a cliff hanger that screams of a sequel. No wonder, a sequel has already been announced.

As of August 16, 2009, the GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra has grossed $98.7 million at the domestic box office with $66.1 million from other countries with a total of $164.9 million worldwide. Hasbro’s merchandising for the movie is top of the line, including the officially licensed Halloween costumes and accessories.  The currently popularity of the movie as well as the announcement of the sequel will make GI Joe costumes best sellers for years to come. Costume Supercenter features Duke, Snake Eyes, and from the Cobra force, Storm Shadow.
