20 Years of Totally Buggin’ – Clueless Anniversary

Clueless

In case it’s not already on your calendar (as if!), today marks the 20th anniversary of the release of the classic Clueless.

Yeah – We’re totally buggin’ about it!

For the very few who have never seen the cult classic, the movie follows a handful of ’90s teens growing up in Beverly Hills and brings light to their #firstworldproblems. If nothing else, the movie inspired some crazy fashion and a laundry list of phrases that defined the decade. Even though it’s much funnier if you revisit the movie for yourself, here are a few of our favorite quotes from the flick’s protagonist, Cher, played by Alicia Silverstone:

On Tai’s education:

Cher: If it’s a concussion, you have to keep her conscious, okay? Ask her questions.
Elton: What’s seven times seven?
Cher: Stuff she knows!

On the history of her house:

“Isn’t my house classic? The columns date all the way back to 1972.”

On literature:

“It’s like that book I read in the 9th grade that said, ‘Tis a far, far better thing doing stuff for other people.'”

On finding “The One”:

On American politics:

“And in conclusion may I please remind you it does not say R.S.V.P. on the Statue of Liberty.”

And, of course, three other favorites:

  1. “Whatever!”
  2. “As if!”
  3. “That was way harsh.”

As you can see, it was the movie that sparked a generation of kids much different than any other. The movies director, Amy Heckerling got her inspiration for the classic from another classic: Jane Austen’s Emma. Here are some other really interesting facts about the flick:

  • Heckerling got her inspiration for the script by actually sitting in on a Beverly Hills high school class.
  • Clueless is a trilogy! Well… Not technically, but hear us out: Heckerling also directed the ’80s flick Fast Times at Ridgemont High and the 2000 Jason Biggs movie Loser. All three are coming of age flicks about teens just trying to get by. Thanks Amy!
  • Remember the scene where Cher and Amber were in debate class talking about Haiti? Well, in that scene Cher mispronounces “Haitians”, justifying her bad grades (that she then negotiates thanks to her lawyer dad). The little flub was not in the script, it was actually a mistake made by actress Alicia Silverstone. Heckerling thought it was so funny she kept it in the movie. Check out the scene here:

Looks like we have to thank Clueless for a ton of stuff, if not just the awesome memories it gave us. Whether you saw it in theaters, on the couch with your family, or in the basement of your best girlfriend’s house during a sleepover, it was always a treat to watch Cher, Tai, Dionne, and the rest of the crew go about their daily lives as normal, busy–rich–teens. And to think, Instagram wasn’t even invented yet!

Costume SuperCenter may not have a closet as extensive as Cher’s, but hey… If you want to look like her and her friends, take a look at our schoolgirl costumes! We have some plaid styles that would make you look like a natural when you’re rollin’ with the homies.

Thanks for the memories, Clueless! Here’s to 20 years more!
