Coneheads – Who are these crazy people?

It’s January 15, 1977. “Oh my goodness! What the…? What are they doing now! Who are these people?!” A bought of hard belly laughter instills! The kind that kills the stomach, makes the tears stream down the face, and a person fight to breath.

I remember the first time I saw them. They were shockingly odd and stupid looking, but this was the point. Saturday Night Live thrived on it.

Dan Akroyd the father, Jane Curtain the mother, and Laraine Newman (Connie) the daughter had their first appearance. I would soon learn to come they weren’t people at all, but aliens from a planet called Remulak! These funky looking creatures tried their best to “fit in” with the human population but their over emphasis on every day mundane things just made them stand out like a sore thumb and made me, along with the rest of America watching, laugh our butts off!

These aliens have been a strong part of American culture since they invaded us. They still do skits of them from time to time on Saturday Night Live and there was even a movie made. People love them and they’ll always be an American Icon.

It seems like every Halloween one of these Coneheads rings my door bell and on occasion I see them at a party or at public functions. These aliens are popular among the young and old; people love “being a conehead” and look for any occasion that’ll let them dress up and talk in a nasally voice squeaking out over technical words like “consuming mass quantities”, “consumables” and “I summon you”.

I love it when Dan and Jane make appearances on Saturday Night Live, they bring my beloved Coneheads back to life. As for the movie, I’ve seen it a couple of times but I have to admit, it doesn’t make me laugh like the skits of Saturday Night Live days.

Are you a fan of The Coneheads? Were you a faithful groupie of the SNL days? Or, did you find yourself laughing more at the movie?
