Hearing about cosplay from Costume SuperCenter is one thing, but the folks here wanted to give the visitors to our blog a better look into the costuming community.
That’s why we’ve decided to start Cosplay Convo – Exclusive interviews with models from our team of cosplayers, talking about their experiences in cosplay, their future plans and why they continue to work with CSC. This week, we sat down with Alice Malice, who modeled CSC’s American Dream costume, and works as an active part of of the group My Geek Goddess.
Costume SuperCenter: What was the first convention or cosplay event you ever attended? Did anything specific happen at that convention that made you say “Wow. I want to keep doing this.”?
Alice Malice: My first even was back in… Oh… 2002? It was my first Megacon. I really had an amazing time. I didn’t cosplay because I didn’t realize that (dressing up) was a thing outside of Halloween, but when I saw it, I knew I had to be a part of it. My first cosplays were not fantastic, but, still, every time I did it, I couldn’t express my sheer delight about being a part of it. I’ve been hooked for years. I really enjoy the sense of creativity, and the comradery, and how easy it is to connect with someone at a con just because of a costume. That’s what made me decide to keep doing it.
CSC: What was your first cosplay? Was it something particular that inspired you to make your first costume?
AM: My first costume was Alice from Resident Evil, and this was even before I started calling myself Alice (Coincidence? I think NOT). It was a group cosplay, and I was just drawn to how much of a bad ass she was. This was the start of a trend for me, as I tend to (cosplay) bad ass babes.
CSC: Obviously, a lot of American cosplayers are hesitant to work with costume retailers as opposed to creating their own outfits by hand. What were your thoughts when you were first contacted by CSC?
AM: That’s an interesting question. I’m never afraid to buy something pre-made for a cosplay. I once had a friend who thought that you should make everything for a cosplay – Even jeans! That’s just nonsense. I make what a can, and sometimes you just buy. If there is a product out there that works well for a cosplay – Go for it! One of my most popular cosplays is something I purchased from a Halloween store online, and you’d never know the difference! What looks good, looks good. And I like products at Costume SuperCenter, obviously!
CSC: For CSC, you decided to wear and review our American Dream costume, which is a play on the Marvel character Captain America. What made you pick that particular costume, and what was the feedback from your fans like? Did they enjoy it?
AM: My fans seemed to enjoy it! It’s well known that I’m a huge “Cap” fan, and I hope that it showed through the photos. I got a lot of patriotism jokes due to the pictures I posted, and I loved it. A chance to show off my love for my country and one of my favorite Marvel characters? Count me in!
CSC: How do you keep yourself engaged with your fans and followers? What’s it like meeting them at conventions?
AM: I LOVE meeting my fans and followers at conventions! If I have the time, we gab about the con, or current comics and Doctor Who. But most of the time, (the interaction) tends to be online. I try to interact as much as possible. If they take the time to pay attention to my silly self on the internet, I try to do the same!
CSC: What are your future cosplay plans? Is there anything specific that your fans can look forward to?
AM: Well! As I stated in the review I did for a Costume SuperCenter wig, I’ll be doing a Lady Loki in the future. And after that, I’m in the works of doing a female Fourth Doctor and John Constantine. I also wish to work on an Elektra, new Rogue, and a Powerpuff Girl! I’m always adding so many to my to-do wish list… Perhaps too many!
CSC: Overall, how would you grade your collaboration with Costume SuperCenter? Hopefully, you enjoyed working with us as much as we enjoyed working with you!
AM: Oh, I have been loving the team at Costume SuperCenter! Everyone is very professional and approachable. Matt is delightful to work with, and I thank them for the opportunity to work with their website! I spend perhaps a little too much time browsing all of your items – All the pretties!
