Bat-fans who left the theaters lamenting at the conclusion of Spring 2016’s flop Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice can now rejoice – The Caped Crusader has returned.
In Warner Bros. Animation’s latest full-length motion picture, Return of the Caped Crusader, fans are taken back five decades as Adam West once again dons the proverbial cape and cowl to take on the most notorious from Gotham’s gallery of rogues. Costume SuperCenter was at the world premiere, as it was shown to attendees at New York Comic Con, and has the top five reasons you should go out of your way to see this nostalgia-driven flick.
1. Same Old Batman
What fans were missing in Dawn of Justice with Ben Affleck’s interpretation of the Dark Knight is more apparent than ever in Return of the Caped Crusaders. Adam West dusts the rust off of his Batman voice, and it seems like he never left Wayne Manor at all. As an added bonus, Burt Ward is back as the Boy Wonder, Robin, too! The original Bat is back and full of morals, wholesomeness, and even a familiar lust for one of his most-pesky adversaries. Which brings us to our next point…
2. Classic 1960’s Villains
Julie Newmar revises her role as Catwoman, and does it in dramatic fashion, as she flip-flops between the sides of good and evil as perfectly as ever. Joining her on the darker side of the storyline are the Joker, Riddler and Penguin, in their classic attires. There’s no tattoos on this Clown Prince of Crime, and his outlook on committing felonies is based around jest and lightheartedness, as opposed to “watching the world burn.”
If you like wordplay, this is the movie for you. A decent amount of adult humor, mixed in with the occasional pun and frequent alliterations make for an intentional comedic relief never seen in a Batman movie, or any superhero movie before it.
4. Fight Word Bubbles
BAM! POW! SLAM! Fight words haven’t been used in a Batman movie in 50 years, and, boy, are we glad they’re back. To add onto the aforementioned point, adult humor is apparent in these captions. The movie pokes fun at the 1966 film, as these words do read the expected WHACK! and THUD!, but look closely, and this time, you’ll also see appearances of words like SPORK! and THONG!
5. One-of-a-Kind Plot
If you’re looking for the ho-hum Batman-beats-Joker story, this certainly isn’t it. Warner Bros. Animation took this plot to new levels that will have audiences going “Wait, ANOTHER twist?” Batman goes from good, to bad, to good while Catwoman goes from bad, to good, to bad. Both heroes and villains go from Gotham City to outer space and back again. You won’t find shark repellent in this story, but you may find a few other unique Bat-gadgets that will keep you laughing.
Overall Return of the Caped Crusader is worth the price of admission. And if you’re looking to turn your watch party into a costume party, make sure you browse Costume SuperCenter for Batman costumes ranging from West to Affleck.
