The Many Costumes of Glinda The Good Witch

Last night on The Oscars, Ellen Degeneres made an appearance as Glinda, The Good Witch of the North, to commemorate the 75th anniversary of “The Wizard of Oz”. She was wearing the classic pink gown and crown as she announced the next presenters. Was Ellen Degeneres the most beautiful Glinda? Perhaps not, but was she the funniest? Yes.

This made me wonder how the Glindas have stacked up over the years. This particular Wizard of Oz costume has really changed over time but if you ask me, the original is the best. Let’s take a look at the many adaptations starting with the most recent portrayal by Ellen and working our way to the original.

Glinda from the Broadway Musical “Wicked”, currently playing on Broadway. Just as lovely as ever, and in the humor department she gives Ellen a real run for the money:

In 2013, the Movie, “Oz the Great and Powerful” recreated Glinda in this sleek white gown. A representation of goodness and beauty if you ever saw one.

Going back to the 70’s, you can see the incomparable Lena Horn playing Glinda in the musical “The Wiz”. This is yet another unique adaptation of the Glinda costume and character. This time, the pink ballgown is replaced by a darker and more dazzling gown.

But here is the original and magnificently beautiful Glinda from the movie, The Wizard of Oz, which is celebrating it’s 75th anniversary this year. When I was a child I though she was the most beautiful lady I’d ever seen. I would dream of having a poofy pink gown just like that but when I was young, costumes weren’t as wonderful as they are now. I would have love a Glinda the Good Witch costume like this one.

Which one is the most memorable to you. Do you have a different favorite Wizard of Oz character costume that you’d like us to feature. If so, let us know in the comments.
