What Do Pine Trees, Cinderella, Tarzan, and a Cowboy Have In Common?

How can I liven up my routine hum drum life? What would turn my life upside down and make me feel alive again? I can remember when I was a kid I had so much fun. Playing dress up was almost a daily thing and definitely a weekly thing. It was a key ingredient of my day’s adventures.

I had this friend named Carol who had this patch of tall pine trees to the side of her house. They were lined up in two rows that were perfect for making imaginary rooms out of. This was the palace where Cinderella danced with Prince Charming and ran out as the “clock struck midnight”. Then of course it was the house where she worked her fingers to the bone before Prince Charming came and found her. The slipper always fit my foot.

On the other side of the neighborhood was the path to the railroad tracks and it was good for riding a bike and for playing Robin Hood or Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Then there were the days of Tarzan and Jane or the adventures of cowboys and Indians. My bike even got included; it was my horse! We had kudzu vines we used to swing from tree to tree. LOL, Carol never did like being Tarzan or Cheetah! I can’t tell you how many times I got into big trouble for walking those tracks; I just refused to believe it was dangerous! I could hear a train coming a mile away and I loved what those pennies looked like. I don’t know how my daddy always found out…but he always did.

I think about how it was possible to have so many costumes to dress up in and the endless imagination of a kid. I credit the costumes to my mom. The imagination, well, I guess I have to credit my mom with this too. If she hadn’t given me all these, I wouldn’t have thought up all those adventures. I never got tired of any of my adventures. Even if they were the same, they were always something I took as far into imagination as I could, and they were always different.

What adventures did you have as a child? Was your bike your horse? Did you ever swing from tree to tree? Wonder if playing a little dress up and swinging from a tree would liven my life up? Nah, I think it’d be safer for me to pretend my bike is a horse. I’m not as young as I used to be.

So, what do pine trees, Cinderella, Tarzan, and a cowboy have in common? Me.
