History of Masks

The use of masks goes back to ancient times. Whether they were used in ritual ceremonies, while hunting, or during wars, they have played a constant role in societies around the world. It is difficult to deduce where and when masks first came about, but it is thought that they were first introduced thousands of years ago as a symbol of authority. According to one source, the oldest masks ever discovered are 9,000 years old, though it is believed that the practice of making masks could go back as many as 40,000 years, and these older versions did not stand the test of time. A variety of ancient cultures used masks in myriad ways: the cult of Shiva, a god appears wearing a horned mask. Ancient Greeks often wore masks during bacchanalia and in the Dionysus cult. Ancient Romans often created death masks after noteworthy citizens died. While the Black Death made its way around Europe, doctors often wore half-masks that covered their eyes and featured long, beak-like noses that protected them from being infected by the disease, which was thought to be airborne.

In more modern times, masks have been used during performances to help actors better express emotions. This is particularly noteworthy of the ancient Greek plays, which were performed in large theaters. Because not everyone could see and hear the actors, masks like the juxtaposed Comedy and Tragedy helped better convey their messages. Masks are still used today in many stage performances (like the Phantom of the Opera), television shows and movies, but for the everyday person, they are perhaps most commonly worn at Halloween and to costume parties.

Adult Masks for Halloween

Whoever says Halloween is just for kids is dreaming. If anything, Halloween is the perfect time for adults to get dressed up and act like kids again. Besides, there are so many more costume ideas for adults than there are for kids. Adults can, of course, wear all of the costumes and masks weve mentioned above; Darth Vader, Catwoman and Captain America know no age. But adults can go the extra mile and don super-scary zombie masks, terrifying clown masks, Michael Myers masks, Freddy Kruger masks - the possibilities are endless. Theyre perfect for scaring your husband, wife and friends at your next big Halloween bash.

But for adults, masks arent just for Halloween. Comic-cons are huge draws for costume enthusiasts, and theres something for everybody - video game characters, TV characters, movie characters, comic book characters - you name it. So many of these costumes look great with masks, so lean into it - go big or go home! Masquerades are also popular themes for fancy dinner parties and gala events. Whether its a lacy eye mask or a full, Venetian-style carnival mask, there are lots of different options that suit everybody.

Or, go for something completely unconventional! Youre guaranteed to see at least one Batman, Iron Man or Ghostface this Halloween. Create a costume and a mask that no one has seen before. Use felt to create a Grumpy Cat mask (R.I.P.), use a simple black eye mask and dress as a burglar, or invent your own wacky character that no one has ever heard about. On Halloween, anything goes.

Types of Masks

Scary masks. Halloween is nothing without a scare or two (or three). There are so many terrifying masks out there, like clear zombie masks, creepy clown masks, devil masks - the list goes on. Besides, any costume or character can be made evil with a scary mask.

Celebrity masks. In this day and age, its almost too easy to embody a celebrity at Halloween.
