Facts About Flappers

Flappers are one of the famous visual icons of the early decades of the 20th century, becoming legendary for their appeal during the roaring twenties, and now you can get one of these flapper costumes for a night of wonderful dancing and Halloween fun! The term “flapper” may have begun as a piece of slang from northern England meaning “teenage girl,” referring to one whose hair is not yet up and whose plaited pigtails flapped on her back. By 1910 the term was popular enough for A. E. James to write a series of stories in the London Magazine featuring the misadventures of a pretty teenage girl, titled “Her Majesty the Flapper.”

Flappers were known for their Paris-influenced styles. Dresses were straight and loose, leaving arms bare and dropping the waistline to the hips. Stockings were held up by garters, and skirts rose to just below the knee, allowing flashes of leg while the woman walked or danced – dances that took advantage of this became popular, such as the Charleston. Boyish cuts became popular, and though hats were still required, hats such as the newsboy cap and the cloche hat became popular. The flapper look required heavy makeup compared to previous styles, with advances in makeup application helping to make the look easier than many previous ones.
